This project involved the renovation of the main facade and outdoor barbecue area of a coastal house located in Pingueral, Chile. The intervention sought to update the architectural language of the house while responding carefully to the demanding coastal environment and its direct relationship with the ocean.
The work was carried out through close collaboration with the construction company, electrical specialists, and material suppliers, ensuring that design intentions, technical solutions, and on-site execution remained fully aligned throughout the process.
As lead architect and construction coordinator, the project focused on transforming the existing facade into a contemporary yet context-sensitive system. A series of stepped terraces was introduced to enhance ocean views and strengthen the connection between interior and exterior spaces. These terraces not only improve spatial quality but also respond to the site’s topography and orientation.
A key architectural element of the proposal is the pine lattice system, designed to provide protection from sun exposure and strong coastal winds while maintaining permeability and visual lightness. This layer acts as a climatic filter, softening the facade and creating shaded outdoor areas suitable for daily use.
Material selection was driven by durability and low maintenance. Fiber cement panels and stone cladding were chosen for their resistance to salt exposure, humidity, and harsh weather conditions typical of the Chilean coast. At the same time, the design complies with current thermal regulations, improving the building’s overall energy performance without compromising its architectural expression.
The barbecue area was conceived as an extension of the social life of the house—an outdoor space designed for gathering, cooking, and long stays. Its layout, finishes, and protection elements were carefully integrated into the overall facade strategy, reinforcing continuity between architecture, landscape, and use.
Throughout the project, collaboration with local craftsmen and specialists played a central role. Their expertise ensured precise execution, material performance, and construction quality, resulting in an architecture that is both durable and responsive to its climate.
This renovation demonstrates how thoughtful design, technical coordination, and material awareness can reshape a coastal home into a contemporary, resilient, and context-driven piece of architecture.
